I just watched NTV7 news and came across with the idea of condemning those who protest against Maths and Science to be taught in English.
Should Maths and Science be taught in English?
Yes, I think they should be.
- Some claim that they have poor command of English, therefore, fail to understand what teachers are trying to convey.
Come on, when do you want to learn if you do not want to learn now? Learn when you are in hell? Maths and Science to be taught in English is a good training ground for students. All subjects in College and University levels are in English. If you fail to understand First-Level education English, can you catch up when you are in Secondary or Third - level as all the syllabuses are so much tougher. Can you cope with that? NO! Booooo......! Stop lazing around and find a way to master English as it's essential. You are born with brain, so make full use of it! If it's not functioning, just cut it off! No point keeping a junk! The government has foreseen the importance of English. It's of no point to protest against such a wonderful thing that the government has made for us, Malaysians - to prepare us for the outside world. Protesting against a good plan is rather frivolous, isn't it? You can't go far without a good command of English.
Some teachers complain that they themselves can't even understand Maths and Science that are in English, so how can they teach their students?
Go back to sleep if you can't even speak fluent English. I wonder why and how you are qualified to be a teacher. So I suppose your interviewers are either deaf or blind. Improve yourself before going for an interview to become a teacher. I know the judges are VERY lenient but have you ever thought of your students' future? Can you sleep at night when you teach students the wrong thing? Like, "I are a girl" instead of "I am a girl"? Would you not feel ashamed of yourself?
Remember, youths are future leaders of the nations! If you teach them the wrong thing, they will end up leading the wrong thing. Now I understand why our country's development and progression are a far cry compared to the other advanced countries. It's because of we've got some fatuous leaders mould the characters of moronic people who just follow blindly.
So learn even if you are a 55year-old teacher who is going to retire in a jiffy. Things are updating day-by-day. The world is getting more advanced; people are getting more and more intelligent. Why limit yourselves the chance of acquiring more knowledge? You wouldn't wanna be left behind and still stand there doing nothing when the world caves in! There're still a lot of rooms for improvement. Come on, free yourselves from your cage and see how the world has become. LEARN and emerge as a better person! Be up-to-the-minute!

I try my best to learn English. I learn from my mistakes. I never felt ashamed to ask for help. After my perseverance, I can speak the language just like those english-ed people! I even joined debate competitions and public speaking. So you see, people learn and emerge as a better person ^^ The process of learning is tough, but one should never give up!
Benrauf: My Malay doesn't suck to that point until I would fail if they were in Malay. I would still get A1. I am just voicing out my views about the importance of English and why those 2 subjects have to be taught in English. It's a good training ground as the language helps to prepare us for the outside world! See, agreements, job interviews, the internet, and everything is mostly in English. Please do not deny the truth that English is essential and it's an international language.(I am not saying you are denying, but just saying please do not)
When you can master English, you can understand those 2 subjects better.
So you learn Mandarin and it's your mother tongue? Or Malay as your mother tongue? Or Hokkien? Then reply in your language when interviewers ask you a question about Science or explain maths in English. So what if you have the knowledge and skills but you fail to even express your views? So go and use your mother tongue together with your skills and knowledge to explain:)Tell me if it works.

I totally agree with your opinion. I mean let's face it, these teachers are teaching maths and science. They graduated with at least and degree and yet they have difficulty teaching in English?
Hellooooo? Am I missing out something here? Do we have universities offering degree courses in Bahasa Melayu?
I don't think so and I would have to say, it's their attitude. Teachers here lack passion for teaching and have no initiative whatsoever to brush up their English (which they wouldn't need to if they have paid attention in their English classes when they were in school)
Instead, they give up. But it's not themselves they will blame, it's the policy-makers.
Sooner or later, most of the students will continue their studies in institutions of higher learning and will be taught the subject in ENGLISH. Why make it hard for the students by teaching them in Bahasa Melayu then make them learn it in ENGLISH?
Might as well standardize the whole thing and teach maths and science in English from the beginning.
But no... Hopeless short-sighted Malaysians can't see that (most of them).
Yes, the Malay language is the 1st language in this country. And yes, feel free to continue teaching it as we are Malaysians. But don't cloud your mind with foolish pride and just because it's our national language, subjects like maths and science should be taught in BM.

This proves that our education system has no standard. It's too exam-oriented. You don't need to have skills or real understanding to get an A, you just need to have a powerful memory to memorize everything!

Initially in Malaysia, science and maths were taught in English. The students and teachers have no problems with it.
When the government decided to change it to Bahasa Melayu, still no problem.
So why when comes to turning it back to English, one can give the excuse of being not ready. It's ridiculous.

You are not ready but you still have to be ready one day. Even if you score high for maths and science that are Malay, you will still have to go through third-level education and university. By the time, all subs will be taught in English.

to Benrauf: dude, First and foremost, to answer your question, I was introduced to 1 2 3, one two three AND yi er san first, malay is my fourth language, but that is not the reason I agree with Catherine's view and I do know MALAYS who prefers to learn science in English who are obviously good at it. You've already said language is just a tool, and knowledge is the most important thing, don't you think it's a bit troublesome to translate the subject to Malay and translate is back to English (and learn everything again) later on? Wouldn't it be easier to learn an INTERNATIONAL subject with INTERNATIONAL language?
